& Choices
Peace
and Choices are separate programs based on the Duluth MN model for
domestic violence treatment. Peace (Partners Ending Abuse and
Choosing Equality) is for female partners impacted by domestic
violence, and Choices, is for males who have used threatening or
controlling behavior towards women. Both groups meet weekly for
twenty-four weeks and use education and mutual assistance to provide
practical information about how to replace threatening and
controlling behaviors in men with non-violent respectful behaviors
toward women. The group provides instruction, support, and self help
to increase awareness of domestic violence and to support taking
responsibility for controlling behaviors.
The basic premise is battering and the misuse of power and control are learned behaviors, with conscious choices made by the abuser. Therefore, new behaviors can be learned and the batterer can make better choices about using or misusing power and control in his (or her) personal relationships.
