James Garrison, LMHC (315-782-4483 x122)
Born and raised in the North Country, I value connection, community, and bringing a grounded, genuine presence into my work. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from The College of Saint Rose and my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from SUNY Oswego in 2023. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of clinical settings, including community mental health, private practice, and substance use treatment, which has shaped a flexible and compassionate approach to supporting clients with diverse needs and experiences.
My therapeutic style is eclectic and individualized, drawing from approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), client-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, as well as art and play-based interventions. I am also certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which informs much of my work in helping clients build coping skills, strengthen emotional regulation, and move toward meaningful change. I believe therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and I work collaboratively with each person to tailor treatment in a way that feels authentic and effective for them.
While I have experience working with individuals across the lifespan and from many different backgrounds, I especially enjoy supporting adolescents, teenagers, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I strive to provide an affirming, nonjudgmental space where clients can explore challenges, deepen self-understanding, and build on their strengths.
Outside of counseling, I enjoy baking, spending time with my dogs, and exploring new hobbies. I also love a good book and playing video games.
